Missouri Plants Southern Magnolia   (Magnolia grandiflora) Tracheophyte: Angiosperm: Dicot: Magnolia (Magnoliaceae) Native North American Plant Habitat: full sun areas. ID Features: thick glossy evergreen leaves, large white flowers in spring. Natural History: The Southern Magnolia is native to the southeastern US but has been extensively planted outside of its range. Its tendency to retain its thick and glossy leaves througout the winter, along with its slow growing habit, have made it a favorite among gardeners.
