Missouri Plants
Nutgrass
(Cyperus esculentus)
Tracheophyta: Angiosperm: Monocot: Sedge (Cyperaceae)
Native North American plant
Habitat: any full sun area. ID Features: grass-like leaves, yellow flowers. Natural History: Nutgrass is also called water grass but it is actually a sedge. It grows small nut-like tubers on its roots for storing food. When the plant is cut off it will grow back from its tubers. The growing tip is sharp enough to pierce vinyl pool liners, which is always a hazard when installing an above-ground pool.
